I.  (SPIRITUAL) OWNERSHIP  OF AMERICA

► Our God is the creator and ruler of all things, including this nation.  He sustains this country.

And God has declared us, by His grace, co-heirs with Christ of all that is the Father’s, including this nation.  America is ours. (Romans 8:14-17, 1 Peter 2:9-10)

•   From JAMA’s Declaration of Dependence:

“We declare our dependency on the one true and living God . . . who alone is the Creator of all things, visible and invisible, including this nation, and who sustains and sovereignly rules over the United States of America . . . .

“If my people, who are called by my name….”  (2 Chronicles 7:14 a, emphasis added).

AMERICA IS OUR COUNTRY BY GOD’S DIVINE DECREE AND CREATED ORDER.

II.  OWNERSHIP LEADS TO AWAKENING

► By becoming spiritual owners of America, we become awakened, in the context of God’s holiness, to the horrors of our own sins, the brokenness of our families, the insularity and worldliness of our churches, the idolatry in our vocations, the hostility to Christ in our schools, in the media, and in our culture, and the overall wickedness of society.

And as we are awakened to these sins, we become awakened to the corresponding needs of our families, neighbors, churches, campuses, workplaces, communities, culture, and country engendering a desire within us to see revival, healing, peace, and restoration take place.  In other words, when you consider something your very own, and you embrace it into your heart of hearts, you start to care for its well-being, its health, and its future, and you want to do something about it.  That is JAMA.

•  From JAMA’s Declaration of Dependence:

“ACCORDINGLY, we declare our love for the United States of America, as this nation was formed and created by God, is sustained and sovereignly ruled by Him, and thusly, we, God’s people chosen by Him to live therein, but not of it, are co-heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ of all that is God’s, including this nation, and are called by the Word of God to seek its peace, restoration, and prosperity;

We declare our love for the people of the United States of America, those within and without the household of God, as we are commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ to love our neighbors as ourselves, in word and deed, and to help those in want. . . .”

AS SPIRITUAL OWNERS OF AMERICA, WE BECOME AWAKENED TO ITS NEEDS—AND ITS SINS.

III.  AWAKENING LEADS TO REPENTANCE

► As owners of America who are awakened to our own and our nation’s sins, we repent of them.  We cry out to God for forgiveness individually and corporately.  We ask God to spare His righteous judgment upon us and this country for our wicked ways.

•  From JAMA’s Declaration of Dependence:

“. . . in a time where many who profess belief in God have lifestyles shaped by selfish gain, security, and convenience, where consumerism has replaced commitment to the local church, where unmerited health and wealth are equated with God’s merited favor, where gossip, factionalism, and insularity are prevalent, where prayers resemble lists of personal wants, where the Word of God has been diluted on the pulpit for the sake of wider appeal, fear of offense, and worldly relevance, where doctrinal legalism has trumped humility and where emotionalism and cultural tolerance has trumped Biblical truths, we declare, with firm reliance on the promises of the holy Scriptures, repentance for these wicked and sinful ways, of which we may or may not be complicit. . . .”

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways . . . .” (2 Chronicles 7:14 , emphasis added).

OUR SPIRITUAL OWNERSHIP OF AMERICA IS DEMONSTRATED BY OUR REPENTANCE OF OUR OWN AND OUR NATION’S SINS.

IV. REPENTANCE LEADS TO REVIVAL AND HEALING

► Revival is a period of unusual blessing and activity in the life of the Church, an out-of-the-ordinary outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon a number of people together, upon a whole church, or a number of churches, cities, or perhaps a whole country (D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones).  This is what we want to see in America, in our homes, in our churches, on our campuses, in our workplaces, and in our cities.

It all starts with repentance and intercessory prayer.  A.T. Pierson observes that “there has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer.” To John Piper, “history testifies to the power of prayer as the prelude to spiritual awakening, revival, and missions advance.”  This is why JAMA is, more than anything, a prayer movement.  We must begin to pray fervently for spiritual awakening and revival and we must call others to join us in this endeavor.

•  From JAMA’s Declaration of Dependence:

We declare our dependency on the Holy Spirit . . . that has, from time to time in the course of history, including this nation’s, and as sovereignly directed by Christ, in response to the prayers of God’s people, descended upon a group of God’s people at the same time, an outpouring over and above its work of personal regeneration, illumination, and sanctification . . .

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  (2 Chronicles 7:14 , emphasis added).

REVIVAL AND HEALING IN AMERICA STARTS WITH THE CHURCH’S REPENTANCE AND INTERCESSORY PRAYERS.

V.  REVIVAL LEADS TO TRANSFORMATION AND LEADERSHIP

► As God awakens us and causes us to pray and repent, and when He chooses to descend upon us, we become transformed.  Our lives change.  And we go out.  We become his agents and catalysts, his ambassadors impacting our homes, our churches, our communities and schools, and our nation for Christ.  This land then becomes transformed.  It has happened before in our nation’s history and we believe God can do it again (Habakkuk 3:2).

Ownership and revival inevitably leads to leadership.  Once you feel you have a stake in something, you do all that you can to see that it transforms for the better.  You take it upon yourself to see that this nation, its schools, its workplaces, its communities, and its families are changed for the glory of God.  That is leadership.

•  From JAMA’s Declaration of Dependence:

. . . we declare that the Triune God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ are the only hope for this nation, the only answer to its ills, the only repairer of broken families, the only salve of wounded souls, the only pacifier of angry hearts, the only lasting comfort to the mourning, the only guide by which decisions are to be determined, the only solution for racism, sexism, and class and generational conflict, the only standard by which character and culture are to be examined, the only solution for injustice and abuse, the only restorer of the afflicted, the only foundation for all knowledge, wisdom and teaching, the only authority by which all proclaimed truths are to be tested, and the only rock on which all should stand. . . .

REVIVAL TRANSFORMS PEOPLE INTO AMBASSADORS AND CHANGING AGENTS OF CHRIST.

VI.  TRANSFORMATION AND LEADERSHIP LEAD TO MISSIONS

► If you look at church history, the great revivals and awakenings in the past resulted in an explosion in the mission field.  JAMA wants to see that happen again.

Indeed, many of our own spiritual heritages can be linked to the Western missionaries that came to Korea as a result of the 3rd Great Awakening (1858-1860).  In 1885, two missionaries, Henry Appenzeller and Horace Underwood, landed in Korea after many months of voyage on the Pacific Ocean.  They were the first American missionaries to Korea.  These men committed their lives to bringing the Gospel to Koreans, risking everything that they had for the lost.  They loved Korea.  And they gave their lives to Korea so that many could be saved.  And many were.  That is ownership.

JAMA’S ULTIMATE GOAL IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE GREAT COMMISSION FOR THE GLORY OF GOD.

VII. JAMA IS FOR THE LOCAL CHURCH

► JAMA is a movement that believes that true Biblical revival and spiritual awakening is generated by God and sustained and promoted through, and for, the local church.
In that way, JAMA is more of an organic prayer movement than an organization.  We rely completely on the partnership we have with so many local churches and their leaders.  With only a handful of paid staff, its leadership is comprised mostly of local church pastors and church lay leaders.

JAMA IS A MOVEMENT BY THE CHURCH, WITH THE CHURCH, AND FOR THE CHURCH.

VIII. JAMA IS FOR ANY COUNTRY ALL NATIONS

► JAMA is not only for America, but it is for all nations. Wherever you live, it’s God’s country and thus, it’s your country! So, let’s repent and pray for its revival!

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  (2 Chronicles 7:14 , emphasis added).

JAMA IS JESUS AWAKENING MOVEMENT FOR AMERICA AND ALL NATIONS.
